Selecting the van that is right for you can appear to be simple though to get it right involves many factors. There are a huge range of things that need to be considered but not all at once.
Initially you just need to know the type of van you should buy and this should be based on a combination of experience and research. If you have some camping and travel experience then you have a lot to base your selection on.
If you have not yet done camping in a van of any type I recommend you hire a couple of camper vans and see what you prefer, before taking the big step.
Each version has advantages and disadvantages and knowing what suits your way of travel and your planned destinations is what is critical in selecting the right rig for you.
Types of van
There are a range of van types that will suit your particular requirements.
1. Panel Van (1 or 2 persona set up)
2. Small Van (1 or 2 persons)
3. 4×4 Ute or Troopy
3. Motor home (Couple or small family)
4. Bus / Coach / 4×4 Truck (whatever)
Panel Van
A panel van is generally a basic setup designed as a comfortable sleeping arrangement with limited cooking and sanitary facilities
Small Van
Generally a Ford or Mitsubishi with essentials like sleeping, cooking and water supply. Things like ablutions are external, or not present though could be contained as portable items.
4×4 Ute or Troopy
Similar to the small van but has greater capacity for going off road so having the essential for food storage, cooking and water supply are all that is needed. An external shower and maybe a portable toilet may be included.
Motor Home
Most common on the road type of camper. Usually has all facilities to be off grid such as water, power, cooking, toilet, fridge, etc. Generally designed for two but can often take 4 with some compromises.
Bus / Coach / 4×4 Truck
A home on wheels and has all the functions to be self contained and off grid when set up appropriately.
